Antique Scottish Oil on Canvas Painting Joseph Milne 19th Century Antique Scottish Oil on Canvas Painting Joseph Milne 19th Century A fine oil on canvas painting by listed artist Joseph Milne,  1857-1911, Scotland,   The painting depicts a landscape with a cottage and sheep.  Signed in the lower right corner and framed in it's original glazed and gilt gallery frame.  The painting is approx. 12 1/2" high by 18" wide. With the frame it is 20 1/2" high by 26 1/2" wide. The painting itself is in excellent condition and the frame is in good condition with some minor distressing. Please view all photos carefully. Guaranteed to be as described.  Artist Bio:  Joseph Milne was born in Edinburgh in 1857 to an artistic family.He was the elder brother of the painter William Watt Milne (1869-1949). Joseph’s son, John Maclauchin Milne, (1886-1957) with his father’s encouragement and influence, also became an acclaimed artist.Joseph painted mainly in oils, but occasionally in watercolours too. He developed a personal style of painting, producing atmospheric landscapesand seascapes which were notable for their strong, bright tones. Although he lived most of his life in Edinburgh, Milne also lived andworked for a time in Dundee and Ayrshire.He exhibited extensively at both the Royal Scottish Academy, from 1877 until 1902 (a total of 81 works) and the Glasgow Institute from 1880-1902(45 works) he also had 7 works shown in London, at the RA between1887 and 1908. Early titles often had a genre content. Favourite subjectswere the coasts of Scotland and working rivers, particularly “The Silvery Tay”.Joseph Milne died in Edinburgh in 1911, at the age of 53.His favourite subjects were the towns and fishing villages on the east coastof Scotland, and working rivers, particularly, the River Tay.He died in Edinburgh in January 1911, at the age of 53.His works can be found today in some public collections, including thoseof Dundee City Council, the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture,Pembroke College, University of Oxford, and Exeter University.
